Sam Kirchner is a landscape architect and urban designer with a deep passion for the social, economic, and environmental aspects of the built environment. Sam’s interests were rooted during his undergraduate studies at Iowa State University, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture and environmental studies.
After graduation, Sam spent several years working at landscape architecture firms in New York City and Dallas, Texas, where he was involved in designing and documenting a wide range of projects, such as urban plazas and master-planned communities. His experience in these firms allowed him to hone his skills and build his portfolio, which ultimately led him to pursue a Master of Urban Design from the University of Michigan.
It was here that Sam was exposed to various broad architectural theories and gained a deeper understanding of real estate and planning policies. This exposure further fueled his passion for landscape architecture and for responsible development that ensures the built environment is deliberately crafted to serve purposes beyond market demand and profit. Sam joined Civitas in 2018, drawn to the firm’s culture of creative freedom and respect. The mentorship and guidance he has received has empowered him to grow his capabilities and excel in project design and delivery.
