Perspectives

Who or what brought you to Civitas? Why did you choose to work here?

As I approached my final semester at Columbia University, I found myself reflecting on my career aspirations and the path I wanted to take. I was particularly passionate about urban design, with a specific interest in placemaking, which emphasizes creating engaging, people-centered spaces. I set out to target firms that shared this focus, However, I also recognized the importance of being open to new experiences, which led me to consider landscape architecture—an area I had yet to explore but felt could enrich my understanding of the built environment.

As an international student, I was keenly aware of the significance of working in a firm that not only prioritized collaboration but also fostered diversity. Civitas had worked on a range of projects, across the country. I believed that a varied team could bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table, enhancing the creative process. My search for the right opportunity took an exciting turn when my professor at Columbia introduced me to Mark Johnson. That introduction proved to be a pivotal moment in my career journey, and the rest, as they say, is history.

How would you describe your personal approach to design?

My approach to design is continually evolving, anchored in a strong emphasis on placemaking and human-centered design. My background in various art forms—ranging from theater and music to classical dance—greatly informs my design thinking. During my time in India, I engaged in urban research that centered on community engagement and the relationship between ‘women and public spaces’. This experience provided me with insights into everyday city life within the Indian context, highlighting the dynamics of human interaction, the complexities of social fabrics, and how individuals respond to challenges. It deepened my understanding of how people occupy and navigate space, reinforcing my commitment to creating environments that truly resonate with their users.

What experiences (or people, or places) have had the most influence on you and/or your design approach?

Growing up in India, my understanding and appreciation for design are deeply rooted in that cultural landscape. My experiences traveling abroad have further broadened my perspective. When you visit another country, you notice how much the cultural traditions heavily influence the designer’s approach and how that shapes a space. Additionally, my father, an architect specializing in historic restoration and preservation, has had a profound impact on how I view design. Being immersed in his work has instilled in me a deep respect for the narrative of spaces and the importance of honoring their context.

What is your proudest accomplishment so far, either at work or in life in general?

Getting into graduate school was a significant achievement for me. Moving to New York alone during the pandemic was initially daunting, but the experience turned out to be transformative. I had the opportunity to meet incredible people and create lasting memories. My time at university greatly shaped my design thinking, exposing me to a wide array of perspectives and innovative approaches that enriched my understanding of the field.

What are your favorite types of design projects to work on, or design challenges to solve?

I am passionate about urban design projects, particularly those that emphasize public placemaking and a human-centric approach that actively involves the community. I believe it’s essential to invest time in researching the context of a location before diving into the design process. I’ve observed that many cities are losing their unique identities and beginning to look increasingly alike. It’s vital to help these cities preserve their history, traditions, culture, and architectural significance, ensuring that each space reflects its distinct character and story.

What do you do outside of work to have fun, or relax, or learn, or volunteer?

I enjoy reading, listening to podcasts, and playing board games, and I’ve recently taken up baking, which has been great. My goal for next year is to learn a musical instrument, possibly the violin. Living in Colorado has opened me up to many outdoor activities I hadn’t done before.I recently tried ice skating and rafting for the first time.

What are you reading or listening to these days?

I’m a huge fan of true crime, so a lot of podcasts with that theme. Growing up, my parents listened to a lot of rock music, so that genre, along with alternative and pop, is definitely my favorite.

What is your favorite food to eat, or recipe to cook?

Many of my favorite foods are South Indian dishes, and I love cooking them at home. I also have a serious sweet tooth, so I can’t resist anything sugary!

Describe one item that you never leave home without.

Phone, keys, wallet, chapstick, sunglasses.

Random thing on your desk

My desk is pretty messy; there are always stacks of papers and coffee cups from the day before.
