Central Commons Park

Every Season Destination

Central Commons Park naturally stands out in the city of Calgary, spanning 3-acres in the University District, but it’s most noteworthy for being a year-round destination. In the summer, Calgarians can enjoy a multitude of activities such as a splash pad, picnic areas with tables and BBQ stations, an expansive lawn and several patio spaces. In the winter, the park seamlessly transitions to include a custom-designed 50-foot long fire feature and a 17,000-square-foot refrigerated skating rink placed on top of the central lawn.

This ‘every season destination’ was built with the community in mind. The idea was to design a place that gets people outside regardless of the weather and to reinforce the health and wellness benefits of outdoor recreation.

The angular design of the park is inspired by the tectonic shifts of the nearby Rocky Mountain range, pulling in an even deeper connection to nature. Weaving green space in between buildings emphasized the integration of landscape and architecture, and was a driving inspiration to the project as a whole. Civitas, alongside Scatliff Miller Murray, designed the park for daily use and community gatherings, enhancing two 80,000-square-foot retail and office buildings by Gibbs Gage Architects. The mixed-use community serves the University of Calgary and its West Campus.

Central Commons Park has quickly taken shape as a highly dynamic, connected, responsible and innovative community amenity, becoming a new destination and landmark in NW Calgary. University District is LEED ND Platinum Certified and is attracting a wide variety of residents thanks to its accessibility, innovative design, convenience and proximity to significant health, higher education and retail facilities in the immediate area.
